New wireless coalition launches to promote unused spectrum

A coalition of technology companies and trade associations formed the Wireless Innovation Alliance to promote new uses for the leftover digital space on the television spectrum. In many geographical markets, up to 75 percent of the airwaves used to carry network television signals are unused, according to WIA. In February 2009, as broadcasters switch to digital from analog transmissions, tech companies are working to develop devices that could operate on the white space, or the frequency between television channels.
